Maybe a man in a higher seat of authority has to be much less trusting in some cases as a way to protect the flock who are more easily mislead. Especially when one considers that the flock may not be in contact with the man you have chosen to trust and they wouldn't think to investigate him on their own, but instead just take your word for it. A good priest would surely do his research, would he not? But then again he has orders too.
